Why it’s good to splurge on key items every now and again

There is something so exciting about seeing those purchases that make you slightly poo your pants a bit at the price but you still find that your brain is going ‘you know what I still kinda think this is worth my while’ and that my friends is the sign of a worthwhile buy.

This beauty is from Zara, from about a month ago, a dress I saw while on my lunch at work and it really was love at first sight. I actually did that thing where I think nah at the price tag and try to find something that’s a wee bit cheaper (as it was only meant to be a new outfit for a cute date night with la boyf) — turns out that the more I looked at everything else, the more I realised how much I wanted it and knew that nothing would compare. It was one of those purchases that I knew it would work in so many occasions and that it would definitely not be a one time wear kinda dress.

The thing with a splurge item is it has to be something that you know is going to be in your wardrobe for a long time no matter how much your style may change. As we get older, we begin to find our style more and more — sometimes that means that there are clothes that unfortunately don’t make the cut along the way but a splurge item will always last.

I feel like personally I have found myself being drawn to quantity over quality. The idea that I could get 10 pieces of clothing for £100 than 1 piece always seemed more of a pull for me. I realise that buying a cheap top that I’ll use and like for 3 months is not as worth it as a piece that can be a long standing staple in my wardrobe.

The older I get, the more I realise that it is okay to spend money on worthwhile pieces and feel fortunate enough that I am in a place where that it is a possibility for me now. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as if I am going out buying designer pieces (lol I am not there yet, your girl has rent to pay) it just means that I can go above that usual high street fast fashion price, and actually buy something I think is worthwhile.

I don’t know if I am the kind of person that would feel ok spending obscene amounts of money on a designer buy. Not only because I think morally I would struggle to spend a ridiculous amount on something that I know could potentially be spent on better things but also because I don’t think I could deal with the sheer embarrassment if a friend or a member of my family asked me how much it was. I guess that’s a situation, I’ll know how to deal with if it ever comes up and maybe recognise that it is important treat my god damn self no matter what anyone else thinks. Here’s to you, future Nicole.

Another benefit to buying clothes that are staple pieces is that I am determined to start lowering the amount of fast fashion I buy. It is something that I know is going to be a progress and I am going to make sure that I don’t feel bad about still buying it from time to time because I know it isn’t something I can just give up but I know that is ok.

Let me know what you guys think about buying staple pieces!

All my love,

Nicole x
